Tuesday 29

Today we read “the rockpile” in class and analyzed the text a little bit. We dove deep into what a blended family can look like. My mom recently got remarried and it’s really weird. I can relate to this how my mom says I don’t even have to call my stepdad “stepdad”. I thought it was interesting how the husband in this story was mad at the mother instead of the son.

Wednesday 23

Today we took a quiz. I got an 88 on the quiz and although I would like to do better, I tried my best. So far I am liking this class. I have really enjoyed all the poems we have dissected and discussed in class.

Monday 21

Today we learned about a new poem. This poem talked about a mom telling her son about life. How life can be hard but you should never stop moving. I liked this poem and appreciated the theme of it.

Tuesday Aug 15 reflection

Today I learned about where we come from and our roots. This related to the lesson because we talked about the roots of black people through a poem by Langston Hughes. “The negro speaks of rivers” shows how black people have been around for a long time in history. Each line tells the story of many rivers around the globe black people have migrated to and from. We also learned how it’s hard to trace ancestry back very far because slaves last names were changed to the slaver owners last name when they were sold.

Reflection 1 intro to African American culture

Reflection 1 Today I learned briefly about the culture, and history of African Americans. I also learned about the stereotypes often associated with African Americans. Something I did not know was the demographic and location of where African Americans live in the United States. Only 31% of the population in Georgia is African American. I thought it would be more. I’m excited to hear some literature from  Langston Hughes.
